A child in a wetsuit and mask floats beside a guide while a Cape fur seal glides past

Swimming with seals with kids

From about age 6 in the water, and from age 2 on the boat. A guide stays right beside young swimmers.

Is it right for your child?

Most children who are happy putting their face in the sea love this. They float in a wetsuit that will not let them sink, hold on to a guide or a float, and watch seals that are about their own size zoom past.

It suits children who can swim a little, follow instructions, and cope with a bumpy boat ride. It is less suited to children who dislike cold water or masks. If you are unsure, practise with a mask and snorkel in a pool first.

The seal viewing trip is a good option for younger brothers and sisters. They get the launch, the ride and the colony, and stay dry.

How we look after young swimmers

  • Proper fit

Children’s wetsuits, masks and fins, checked by the crew before launch.

  • A guide alongside

Tell us you have children in the group and a guide will stay with them in the water.

  • Floats on request

Extra flotation for anyone who wants something to hold.

  • No pressure

Back on the boat whenever they like. Watching from the tube still counts.

Tips from the crew

  • Book a morning trip, when children are freshest.
  • Dress them in a swimsuit before you leave home.
  • Pack a warm hoodie, a towel and a snack for afterwards.
  • Give seasickness medicine in advance if they are prone, following the label for their age.
  • Explain the one rule in the car: look, do not touch.

Read the safety page for how we manage the risks, including the seal rabies precautions.

Family questions

What is the minimum age?

We recommend the swim for children aged 6 and up who are comfortable in the sea. Children can ride on the seal viewing trip from age 2. If your child is younger than 6 and a confident swimmer, ask us; the crew will give you an honest answer.

Do you have wetsuits for small children?

Yes. We stock children’s wetsuits from around age four, plus small masks and fins.

Do children pay full price?

Yes. Each child needs a full seat on the boat and a full set of kit, so the price is the same as for adults.

Can I stay on the boat while my child swims?

Yes. Book yourself a seal viewing ticket at R795 and watch from the boat. For young or nervous children, we suggest one parent gets in the water with them.

What if my child gets cold or scared?

They can get back on the boat at any time. The skipper is right there, and nobody is ever made to stay in. Plenty of children start by watching from the tube and slide in once they see the seals.
